Christ stands amongst us at the Mass and prays for sinners by offering His once-for-all Sacrifice. When love and obedience unite us to Christ, we pray in His name to the Father, guided by His light.

One of the horrors of war is that it can corrupt the innocent victims as well as the aggressors. Just as a 'good' soldier can become careless of life's virtue, and even cruel, so an 'innocent' victim is in danger of hating those who made her suffer, and therefore being 'innocent' no more.

God gave us life. In His sight, people who misuse or mistreat their bodies are behaving as strangely as people who might use electrical goods for unforeseen purposes: a fridge to store dirty pots, a metal-detector as a flail, a television set as a stool, or an electric drill as a dibber for bulbs!

Everyone on earth can choose to call out for God's help, hoping to be heard. Yet those who have been baptised into Christ, made adopted children of God, living in His light, can speak with God as with a friend, and have a sure hope of Heaven, if faithful to the end. Christ's Spirit, living in souls, gives knowledge of God, intimacy, and hope, and is a lamp for the Way.

The more firmly we hold on to Christ, the more surely we can help others through our efforts, in intercession and action.

We must not linger by a pool of consolation in prayer, but must press on to the source of all our joys: God Himself.
