Though some would hide the evidence - just as blood flows from a wounded body, so a 'haemorrhage' is evident when disaster has occurred in the Church.

When anyone determinedly steps out to serve God, he or she is led on a firm path. The way is clear, but it's as if a burning lake lies at one side, so great care is necessary. One foolish step - such as pride - would mean disaster. The person who stays close to the wall (to Christ) will arrive safely into His arms, in Heaven.

As people move towards death, and the Abyss, some cannot see the bridge to the other side. Others know where to find Christ, the bridge, and walk steadily towards Him. Some people have heard about the bridge but have allowed themselves to be swept away, in serious sin, towards disaster.

There are some souls who drift towards disaster. Though outwardly pious they abandon God through their self-will, disobedience and neglect of people in their care.

Someone who sees a warning about thin ice, and deliberately disobeys, even stomping on the ice in a display of 'bravery', will certainly fall into the freezing depths. So it is with grave sin, committed by persons who refused to listen to warnings. Through such sins, people risk disaster: the worst of all being the loss of God.

To live on earth is to be surrounded by disasters, and to be called to undergo our own trials, hence the importance of knowing that we are all brothers and sisters, all in need, all able to help one another.

Just as Our Blessed Lady persevered in hope, in the worst of all times, when her beloved son was dead, so must we all persevere in trust in God, even when our lives seem to be heading for disaster.

Mortal sin is like a whirlpool. It is easy to be swept into it, and it is impossible to escape disaster. In the life based on the Sacred Liturgy, however, we can be carried powerfully along by the sacraments and holy habits, until we arrive on the shore of Heaven.

Christ gives every sinner opportunities for reflection, repentance and change. Yet people who continue to ignore His invitation are heading for spiritual disaster as surely as people travelling on a fast steam-train as it suddenly approaches a fallen tree on the track.

Difficulties and apparent disasters can providentially give people the time to think about the meaning of life. After such times, some people repent, and change their lives; others break free from a 'straight-jacket' of atheism, to follow Christ.

Some people are so engrossed in their own interests that it is only when an apparent disaster tears a jagged hole in their hearts or in the fabric of their lives that they look up, yearning for help - and allow the Holy Spirit, unceasingly ready to help, to bring light, truth and consolation into their lives.

Many very sinful people, seen here laughing and drinking, lead lives which can lead to disaster. By a small step, they can fall into Hell, so dangerous is the state of mortal sin in which they live. If they ascend to God by repentance, they take the stairway to the safe place, a state of grace, where Christ Himself has bridged the gap.

When there has been a death, or a tragedy for the nation, it is important that all who mourn, or work for justice, or show sympathy for others, or demonstrate for change, open their hearts to the influence of the Holy Spirit, and refuse entry to the spirit of hatred, lies and malice which is Satan.

No matter how people die, whether of sickness, old age, or in what seem like accidents or freak storms or earthquakes, no-one leaves this life one second earlier or later than the time appointed by God the Father, Who governs all things and all people.

Whether people die of natural causes, or disease, or in earthquakes, or explosions, or in apparent accidents on bridges, ships or motor vehicles, each person will be judged on his life and behaviour. Each of us should ask: "Where will I end up going?" - that is to say, to Heaven or Hell?

Christ is God-made-man, Who endured 'hell on earth', and sacrificed His life, in order to teach people about sin and goodness, and to conquer sin and death. He showed by his coming to earth, that the Father is not a tyrant, glad to send people to Hell, but a loving Father, Who, with His Son, has done everything possible to rescue, warn and convert sinners, to spare them their inevitable disaster.

God rewards all who have done His Will. Just as the Father has compassion upon every innocent child who dies through abortion, so He has compassion on everyone who dies not by such deliberate acts, but by natural disasters, by floods, famine, hurricanes, tidal waves and earthquakes, for example. Each individual is precious to Him, and receives a just judgement at death.

When a great natural disaster strikes, people are suddenly taken from what was preoccupying their heart, mind and efforts. They will be judged by God, who sees who was occupied with ordinary duties, who was planning an adulterous affair, for example, or who was cooking a meal and whether she was holy or in a state of mortal sin. How blessed are those who are ready to die at any moment.
