By a mere thread of charity, and a tiny prayer, we can save one who might have fallen to the depths.
Our Lady's mantle falls like a tent around a fragile soul, to shield it from harm, and to provide a 'meeting-place' with God.
We have a choice: to climb the mountain of holiness before we die, and go through the 'curtain' at death straight to Heaven, by God's grace; or to make great efforts, or half-hearted efforts, then finish the ascent in Purgatory; or we can choose to give up the climb, and to fall away, and to abandon the hope of reaching Heaven after death.
In God's sight, little babies who die - before birth or after; of natural causes or abortion - are like shooting stars which flare briefly and then fall from the sky. These lives sparkled briefly before tumbling into God's care, as if into a father's arms; yet much prayer is necessary, to halt the evil of abortion by which some people do a grave wrong to the babies, and to their own souls.

In His unchanging Will, God is like the perpetual and steady descent of a vast forest waterfall. Just as the water cannot suddenly flow upwards or sideways, so God never changes in His desire to offer us true life, true freedom, forgiveness and holiness, if we will accept them.
Some people do not believe in the 'bridge to Heaven', which is Christ; or they allow themselves to be carried away by the crowd to follow another, Godless way of life. At death, suddenly arriving at the Abyss, and nowhere near the 'bridge', they plunge to their doom. Nothing can stop them from falling. They have nothing to hold onto.
The Catholic way of life consists of love and obedience. Without love, we become self-satisfied by our obedience. Without obedience to God's Will, we 'fall' into self-will. With both, we resemble Christ our Saviour.
God's love 'falls' upon us unceasingly, as if from a waterfall. How surprised we would be if something interrupted the flow. We must beware of stopping the 'flow' of generosity in our own lives towards others.
Christ showed me plainly that there is only one Way from earth to Heaven: the narrow way made by Him, so that all Who will trust in Him can follow the Way and arrive safely in Glory. Those who refuse to follow the safe Way inevitably fall, at death, into the dark Abyss.
Someone who sees a warning about thin ice, and deliberately disobeys, even stomping on the ice in a display of 'bravery', will certainly fall into the freezing depths. So it is with grave sin, committed by persons who refused to listen to warnings. Through such sins, people risk disaster: the worst of all being the loss of God.
Just as a person who deliberately skates on thin ice is bound to fall through it, so people who willfully ignore God's laws risk falling and being lost.

Those who turn to the Lord in their sufferings receive graces and blessings, and even new hope, unlike those who neither ask for His help nor thank Him for what is good - some of whom fall into despair.
The great 'height' to which a saintly soul reaches still falls far shot of the infinite 'heights' of the holiness of God, from whom we receive life, and faith and hope.
The journey of faith leads to light and joy, but we must be careful not to fall into the darkness through carelessness or pride

It is worthwhile to persist in prayer for people in need, or in great trouble, and to pray even when there seem to be few results and little help. By prayer, a fervent soul can stop another from committing worse sins. By prayer, we can even prevent dying souls from falling into Hell.
