The Lord does not want us to do penance all the time, and become miserable, or proud of our self-sacrifice. There's a time for penance and rigour, and a time for a good rest, with a cup of hot chocolate, and a biscuit - in the Lord's company, at peace.
War can endanger or corrupt the fighters. It can even endanger the souls of the injured innocent by making them bitter or full of hate. What sort of preparation for Heaven is armed struggle and all the evils that cause war to flourish?
Christ loves to welcome His friends in Holy Communion. He especially delights in giving consolation and peace to those who are weary in His service, or enduring extraordinary trials for love of Him.
Those Christians who struggle to be Christ-like in difficult circumstances do well to 'look' at Christ's earthly life. The founder of Christianity lived in His own country as a man of peace; and he spent much of his time healing as well as preaching. His followers should be people of peace.
A person trapped in sinful ways needs help to change: even vigorous help, which he might not much like, though he has little strength of his own. He's as if in a desert, within sight of the 'oasis' of sanctity and peace. A good, brave person will vigorously help him to persevere on the path, even if receiving no thanks.
God our loving Father delights in forgiving each person who turns to Him in sorrow for sin, and trust. But those who do not repent of their sins and do not turn to God, cannot receive the forgiveness which He holds out to us all our lives.

Each of us can picture himself as standing at the 'edge' of Heaven, near the steps that lead up to Christ and Our Blessed Lady, who are surrounded by the Saints. Each of us can ask: Am I ready to enter? Do I now lead a life of purity, love and peace?
Christ and his Mother, with all the Saints and Angels, live in the glory of Heaven. If we are called 'home', are we ready to enter? Are we holy, pure, and at peace with God and our neighbor?
Through being wholly united in love with the Holy Trinity, through doing God's Will and loving all those He loves, the soul is held like a child at God's heart in blissful prayer, in incomparable peace and security.

In Holy Communion, Christ can draw us close so that we can rest our head on His breast, like St. John, and rest beside Christ in utter peace, joy and fulfilment.
It is tragic to see someone walking as if in a 'tunnel' of gloom, hidden, by a life of sin, from enjoying God's light, and with none of the peace-of-soul that comes with repentance. Such a soul is in need of the powerful help brought by the prayers of a friend, and the grace of God.
Christ blesses us and gives us peace and security.
We need to maintain an inner peace at every provocation. If we are attacked, let us remember that Christ was followed and pestered by people who were determined to annoy Him, or to trap Him into some unwise or inflammatory answer.
Christ showed me that when He looks at me when I am suffering, it is as if He is looking with love at a little child; and His only desire is to help me and give me inner peace, and comfort and joy.
God the Father showed me, in prayer, that when I am forgiven, joyful, and very close to Him in the bond of charity, it's as if I sit at His feet, in silence and peace, as He strokes my hair.
In Holy Communion, Christ did not weary me with conversation, but invited me to lean on Him, just as He had once shown me before, and to enjoy His Presence in perfect peace and contentment.
