In church, we are on the threshold of Heaven, in the Presence of Christ our God. Although it is sometimes necessary to offer a quiet greeting or enquiry, it is not right to engage in idle chatter, e.g. about football results or holidays. It is the House of God, and we should want to pray there and allow others to pray.

If Jesus were walking through a town centre, people would rush to see Him. Yet He is now truly Present a few metres away, in the tabernacle in our church; and though He longs to welcome us, many people don't know about Him - or simply ignore Him.

Many people would rush to see Jesus, if He were to appear in the local high street. And no-one should condemn as 'over-pious' those Catholics who love to meet Jesus at the tabernacle, in extra visits to church.

The all-holy and majestic God Whom we praise at Mass, through Christ His Son, is present here. This huge Cathedral, and everyone in it, rests in God's care. Were we to see Him, we would see a blazing fire reaching out powerfully through the entire building: a burning fire of pure love.

The Father accepts our gifts of bread and wine, as if leaning from Heaven like a kind parent taking gifts from a child. The greatest gift we can offer is Christ Himself made Present when our gifts are changed into His Sacred Body and Blood.

If we realise the magnificence of Christ's love, and Christ's glory, in His Presence amongst us, we will be encouraged to act reverently in church, and to see that we are all sinners before Him.

When the bread has been consecrated at Mass, Christ is substantially Present on our altar, in all His glory. We offer Him the love and the reverence due to His Divinity, here in 'God's House'.
