The Lord does not want us to do penance all the time, and become miserable, or proud of our self-sacrifice. There's a time for penance and rigour, and a time for a good rest, with a cup of hot chocolate, and a biscuit - in the Lord's company, at peace.

It is a dangerous thing for someone to be so unwilling to leave his own interests or obsessions that he is prepared to ignore the cries of someone in distress or desperate need.

Jesus was made refreshed and joyful by sitting with His friends in Bethany, in a welcome silence. He knew He was loved, and though He was full of compassion for needy people He was glad to retire for a while from the noise and bustle of the crowds.

Sometimes, when we are tired, Christ calls us to rest, and 'helps us' to find that rest in our lives.

Christ wants us to know that we never suffer alone. He knows and sees our every pain and heartache. He invites us to bring everything to Him in prayer, and to find rest in His presence.

Truly, each priest can turn to Our Lady for help, confident that she has a special interest in his hopes, joys, fears and sorrows. She keeps very close to her Immaculate Heart all who are configured to her son.

Some of the 'roads' we travel in the Lord's service seem unending; yet we need to be prepared for sudden surprises and changes which He has arranged for us. It's as if we travel through mile upon mile of forest, then are awestruck when the Grand Canyon comes into view.

In Holy Communion, Christ can draw us close so that we can rest our head on His breast, like St. John, and rest beside Christ in utter peace, joy and fulfilment.

Christ blesses us and gives us peace and security.

Christ would not let me pray anymore, when I was exhausted from giving a talk about Him. It was as if He held me like someone holding a sick relation, as He invited me to rest, and to recover my energy.
